OFSTED's inspection activities have grown since its inception under the Education (Schools) Act 1992. Subsequent legislation has expanded the role to include inspections of Local Education Authorities, nurseries and Initial Teacher Training.
Under the Care Standards Act 2000, OFSTED has responsibility for regulation of childcare provision from September 2001.
From April 2001, OFSTED will be inspecting sixth form, general further
education and specialist colleges. The link below provide
